The Bozo people from Mali are a fishing people, known as the ‘masters of the river’. This superb Bozo Hyena mask was used in entertainment-based masquerades and was danced by the men in the community. The modern Bozo Hyena mask is a little more simplified and often painted in brighter polychrome colors.
Being fishermen, the Bozo are a semi-nomadic Malian group that will move their homes according to the seasons that affect the level of the water.
